Maine Cottage opened for business in 1988 in Yarmouth, Maine with a plan
developed and executed by Peter Bass who saw parallels in the apparel business
that presaged opportunities for marketers of colorful, casual home furnishings
to a new generation of consumers who grew up with color magazines, TV and
movies. These basic ingredients plus samples of eleven furniture designs
prototyped by a carpenter named ‘Cookie’, five bold colors from Carol’s paint
palette, and an offer from a friend to design the first brochure for free. Since
then, Maine Cottage has been home to colorful, well-designed, stylish furniture
and outstanding customer service for 18 years now. Maine Cottage designs,
manufactures and markets over 200 furniture designs in hardwood, rattan and
upholstery and colorful home textiles and other home furnishing products in
